NY Times top ten books of the year

Fiction
Haruki Murakami, KAFKA ON THE SHORE
Zadie Smith, ON BEAUTY
Curtis Sittenfeld, PREP
Ian McEwan, SATURDAY
Mary Gaitskill, VERONICA

Nonfiction
George Packer, THE ASSASSINS' GATE: America in Iraq
Mark Stevens and Annalyn Swan, DE KOONING: An American Master
Jonathan Harr, THE LOST PAINTING
Tony Judt, POSTWAR: A History of Europe Since 1945

Funny that William Vollmann's Europe Central, which just won the National Book Award, didn't make the list.

Prep made the list? Sheesh. It's a fun little nugget - esp. if you went to boarding school. But top 10? sheesh.

Word is that a certain midwestern professor/critic was on the judges panel for the NBA, striking a blow for Vollman and excess, and confounding all the NY literary bookies who had Vollman at a 10 to 1 long shot. Now it makes more sense!
